For most people visiting Australia for the first time the Great Barrier Reef in Tropical Queensland is a must see. And take it from me this blue lagoon paradise will take your breath way. It's home to 1,500 types of different fish and 400 types of underwater coral, 900 islands and 3000 reefs. Popular tourist activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, exploring the rain forests and sailing.

Back in 1981 the Great Barrier Reef was chosen as a UNESCO world heritage site and was also labeled as one of the seven wonders of the world. It is a special habitat for many species in fear of extinction, those like the dugong or large green turtle. The Great Barrier can be seen from space and it is the largest natural structure on earth, being completely made up of living organisms.

A large part of the site has been zoned as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to curb the impacts of tourism and overfishing

Travellers are spoilt for choice when visiting this vast natural playground stretching from Bundaberg to Cape York. The most biologically stunning part of the marine park begins just north of Lizard island. Also popular with divers is Cooktown and the Ribbon Reefs, or Cairns and Port Douglas with Green Island..

Sports Fishermen may want to visit the Mackay and Hinchinbrook regions because of the very clear waters and world class charter boat operators. Other areas of interests include;

Townsville -Home to the Yongala shipwreck.

Whitsundays- A tropical island paradise which is popular with honeymooners

Airlie Beach- A Backpackers Mecca and gateway to the Whitsundays

Capricorn Coast - Inhabited by 5 types of marine turtles and some very interesting bird species
